Becoming an Active Bystander

How do you respond to harm in community or workplace? In this Porch Chat we will discuss the theory and practice behind being an active bystander. This Porch Chat session will be led by Rod Friesen, Restorative Justice Program Coordinator from MCC. Participants.

Participants will also learn more about Training Active Bystanders (TAB) by HUB partner organization,  Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), Carizon Family and Community Services, Community Justice Initiatives, (CJI) Coalition of Muslim Women Kitchener Waterloo, The Ripple Effect Education (TREE), or Unity Kitchener.

Porch chats are an opportunity for the community to come together and have conversations about what’s happening in our community. They are to promote understanding, build community connections and facilitate action among citizens and communities. Porch chats are part or the Friends of Crime Prevention initiative and chat ideas are brought forth my members of our community.

Understanding the Impact of Trauma and Abuse on Children and Responding Together

In this Porch Chat we will share some of our knowledge about trauma, the impact on families and the harm done when children are exposed to violence in their home or relationships. Together we will explore how we can build resiliency and safety during a time of uncertainty and isolation. Facilitated by outreach workers from Family and Children Services and Women’s Crisis Services,  participants will learn about the collaboration between these two agencies and how we can all support, advocate and encourage families experiencing any type of abuse or domestic violence to seek help and access the supports of community partners.

Family can be a great source of joy and support in our lives; however, unresolved conflict can put significant stress on families. Join us for a conversation to understand some of the underlying factors which may be leading to unresolved conflict and techniques to resolve the conflict to increase your family’s resilience.

Facilitated by Community Justice Initiatives, this Porch Chat is part of a series facilitated in partnership with the Keep Families Safe Coalition striving to prevent family violence in the Region of Waterloo due to the increased stress and isolation of the pandemic.
