Upstream

Community wellbeing starts upstream

Upstream approaches to community safety and wellbeing are about more than just the absence of crime; they are about creating a place where everyone has a range of opportunities to grow, learn, work, play, connect, love and be loved.

In June 2021, the Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council launched our webinar series discussing UPstream from various perspectives. Click the button below to find the links to the recordings of past webinars.

Together we can create a more positive experience for everyone in our community

Our actions, attitudes, and choices are shaped by our environment and our lived experiences. In order to create a more positive experience for those around us, we need to address the foundational systems and relationships in our society that play a critical role in shaping our environment and experience of wellbeing.

The foundations of community wellbeing include:

  • Equity in the community
  • Accountable political systems and decision-making processes
  • Fair economic systems
  • Social norms, values and culture
  • Anti-racism
  • Community engagement and connectedness
  • Compassion

Upstream efforts allow everyone to thrive

When we start upstream we are able to link many aspects of wellbeing such as safety, health, income, housing, belonging, etc. In turn, upstream approaches allow us to address multiple issues at the same time, with potentially fewer resources.

Areas in which a community can thrive when we focus efforts upstream include:

  • Improved safety
  • Social inclusion
  • Improved health
  • Decreased substance use
  • Fair income
  • Food security
  • Educational success
  • Access to quality housing
  • And many more benefits
